Nurse Cath Hardacre is suspending for telling journalist Sam Kelly about the neglect on her A and E ward. When her friend Ally Sutton, a qualified doctor, leaves for New Zealand Cath assumes her identity and gets a job in a Scottish hospital after her fake credentials impress department head Brigitte Rayne. Karl, her ex, is less happy that she took their little girl Molly with her. Cath's empathetic approach to patients wins over her colleagues, including divorced doctor Andy Brenner and she acquits herself well operating on a car crash victim.
