In 1959 the Soviet probe Lunik 2 becomes the first spacecraft ever to hit the Moon. Within a month it is followed by Lunik 3, which takes the first pictures of the dark side of the Moon. Soviet Union had already impressed the world with the Sputniks, the first satellites, and when in 1961 the cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin becomes the first man in space, the Americans are embarrassed. President Kennedy starts a space race by declaring that US is going to land a man on the Moon. They Americans work hard to fulfill this goal, and on July 1969 the astronaut Neil Armstrong becomes the first man ever taking a walk on the Moon. The scientists are eager to research soil and rocks brought back from the Moon. They find out that the Moon is just as old as Earth and is made of the same rock, but has no water. The most accepted theory from now on is that the Moon in the beginning is a part of Earth. When Earth collides violently with another celestial body, a lot of rocks and other stuff are hurled out ...
