Following Kevin's attempted suicide, Amy, his widowed twin sister, a tenured aeronautical engineering professor who does contract work for the UN and the US military on the side, invites him to live at the family home in Taylor, Texas until he feels well enough to be on his own again, and has gotten his life back on track, he now an emotional mess of a person. The one person who does not welcome Kevin with open arms is Amy's teenaged daughter Reese, who has been struggling since her father John's death and who cannot forgive Kevin in his selfishness in not being there for Amy in her time of grief, Kevin too preoccupied with what was then his seemingly successful life. His life in Taylor may be all the more difficult in running into old friends, acquaintances and colleagues, such as his high school girlfriend, Kristin, who happens to be one of Reese's teachers.
