In 1617 a group of women arrive in Jamestown, Virginia, to be settlers' wives, including the aristocratic Jocelyn Woodbryg, due to marry her English fiancé, Samuel Castell, a recorder for the Virginia company which is, overseen by governor George Yeardley. Alice Kett however and Verity Bridges are to marry men they have never met. Alice falls for handsome Silas Sharrow but must wed his oafish brother Henry, who rapes her and is displeased to forfeit land in exchange for marriage, though when he is later blown up looking for gold she seems to have her chance with the gentle Silas. Verity's husband is town drunk Meredith Rutter with whom she reaches an understanding after almost dying as she tries to escape from him. Samuel is asked both by the governor and his rival Redwick and Redwick's secretary Farlow to spy on each other but the wily Jocelyn sees this as a chance to help her husband by playing the two groups against each other, as well as befriending Alice, to whom she had admitted...
